Similar to how phone numbers identify individual phones, IP assigns every internet-connected computer a unique IP address. These addresses are represented as decimal numbers grouped into four sections, such as 79.99.1.121.
In the early 1970s, computer networks consisted of only a few dozen machines. Today, the internet connects billions of devices worldwide, each with its own IP address. When you visit a website like dnsmonitor.com, your browser connects to the server’s IP address and retrieves the website’s content, which is then delivered to your device.

Short, descriptive URLs are easier for both people and search engines to understand. Including your keyword in the slug (the part of the URL that identifies a page) can give search engines an extra clue about the page’s focus. Keep it clean and meaningful—no fluff or filler words.
How does DNS resolution work?

Hosts possess distinct IP addresses and hostnames within a network, whether internal or external. A host’s hostname comprises its local or subdomain(s), parent domain name, and domain extension (e.g., .com, .org, .net), collectively establishing a recognizable identity for clients to engage with. Various third-party DNS providers are accessible online, including internet service providers and platforms like Google and Cloudflare. Enterprise-level providers cater to private networks, while organizations can also establish local DNS servers to exercise greater control over internal requests.
When you want to visit a website, you enter its URL, such as dnsmonitor.com, into your browser, see image 2. The browser then sends a request to the DNS server of your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and asks for the IP address associated with that domain name.
If the ISP’s DNS server has the information, it sends back the correct IP address, allowing your computer to establish a connection and retrieve the web pages of Internet Literacy.

However, if the ISP’s DNS server doesn’t have the IP address for dnsmonitor.com, it forwards the query to other servers. It contacts any of the thirteen sets of root servers located worldwide to determine where to send the query, see image 3.
These root servers don’t have records for all domain names, but they keep track of all top-level domains. The top-level domain is the part of the domain name that appears after the last dot, like .se, .dk, or .com.
